BALPPA has taken part in lobbying activity on behalf of the industry since its inception. This has evolved over the years and we have been involved in many campaigns and government legislation that affect all sectors of the industry for both Operators and Trade Suppliers and Service Providers.
We have worked with lobbying partners and other trade bodies and Associations over the years to bring about change and developments to help the industry and secure its future. Some of the past campaigns that BALPPA has helped to lead include the school holidays Deregulation Bill, the triennial review of Machine Gaming Duty, the use of zero hours contracts, the regeneration of seaside towns, the daylight saving campaign, business rates review and we are a very active part of the Cut VAT for Tourism campaign which firmly remains on the agenda.
However, as is the norm in the lobbying arena, situations shift and change continuously, not least with constant changes to the cabinet.
We have also experienced unprecedented times in recent years in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic which forced us to change our lobbying priorities in a bid to obtain immediate government support for the industry.
We worked very closely with UK Hospitality, our lobbying partners, holding regular meetings with them and government departments including DCMS and were successful in securing support in a number of areas, including the implementation of the Job Retention Scheme, the VAT reduction for the industry, reductions in business rates and securing other government backed loans and grant schemes. We also worked hard with the government to secure the reopening of our industry by developing operating guidelines.
Moving forward from the pandemic, we continue to work hard on the number of challenges our industry is facing and these issues include; the cost of living crisis, energy bills, business rates, issues surrounding recruitment and distribution as a result of Brexit.
